How does the writer present death in their story?
One way in which the writer presents death in the story is the mention of wasps and wasp corpses. This is a crude representation of death as the story is nothing about wasps (as the title suggests) instead we can look at the wasps as a distraction from what really is happening in the novel. 'wasp corpses' and 'pound its body to dust' could mean the character (Therese) is taking revenge upon the life they are living, as we establish that their mother is absent and her role has to be taken by the older sister, Evelyn.
Another way death is represented in this story is by the harsh introduction of Mr Mordecai. This represents death as the word Mordecai means death in Italian. This name being mentioned on the first page tells us the author is deliberately making us think to what can happen next in the story - this also foreshadows what turmoil is going to take place in the lives of the main characters.
